The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been granted permission by the Green Bay Packers to interview quarterbacks coach Tom Clements. Coming just two days after the Bucs asked for permission to interview Joe Philbin, they felt compelled to interview Clements as well. Clements is regarded by many as the man who created Aaron Rodgers and has put Matt Flynn on the map. He has also coached up Tommy Maddux (Won the Comeback Player of the Year in 2002), Kordell Stewart, Elvis Grbac, Jake Delhomme, and Kerry Collins. Clements was an offensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills in 2004-2005, finishing no better than 27th in the pass and 13 in rushing.

The whole purpose of this “methodical” head coach search is to bring in the best candidate which has more to offer than Raheem Morris did. Clements has two years as a coordinator under his belt but past that there is nothing to imply he would be a great head coach. While he obviously has helped in a winning organization, it is head scratching the Bucs would want to interview the coordinator and then a positional coach which is under the coordinator. First off, while he must be happy Clements got an interview request, Joe Philbin must be wondering what the logic is here. Isn’t it just a slight slap in the face to ask the head of the offense in and almost immediately ask a positional coach in? Doesn’t it show the Buccaneers have not been as methodical as they want us to think? The organization has had weeks to prepare a list of potential candidates and at least draw up a basic plan for the future. Yet here they are, interviewing more candidates than other teams searching for a coach and interviewing sporadically at that. Coaches who have been out of the NFL for years, offensive coordinators, defensive coordinators, and now positional coaches. The Buccaneers are all over the map and cause for concern is growing. The Raiders, whom have just changed GM’s a week ago already seem to have more of a plan of action than the Buccaneers do.

The Buccaneers are reportedly going to start a round of second interviews but if that is the case then why the request for Clements? Maybe there is more to this than I am seeing. Maybe they are interviewing everyone in order to build an entire coaching staff at once? Still, the carousel which is the Buccaneers head coach search tells us one of two things. Either the Buccaneers don’t know what they want and are waiting for a candidate which blows them away or they are being methodical to a fault. The longer this goes on the worse it will once again be for this team. We all bought into the “youth” movement which in reality was a “money saving” movement. Now we have all bought into a “methodical” movement which is slowly turning out to be a “we don’t know what we want” movement.
