New Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano had his formal introductory presser today and may have given us some insight on potential hires. He stated that he plans on hiring both an offensive and defensive coordinator despite being a defensive mind. He also talked about some of the coaches he respected and influenced him. Among those names was Butch Davis. Schiano was the Miami Hurricanes defensive coordinator under Butch Davis during the 1999 and 2000 seasons. Davis, a former Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator, mentored Schiano and is why the two have a great relationship. Those Miami Hurricane teams ranked 12th in points allowed in 99′ and 5th in 00′ which opened the door for Schiano to be hired at Rutgers.

Butch Davis is looking for work after being fired from the North Carolina Tar Heels head coach position last year. A group of players were suspended permanently for allegedly accepting gifts from sports agents. Though there was nothing tying Davis to the incidents, UNC fired him in order to save face. Davis was a defensive line coach for the Dallas Cowboys during Super Bowls 27 and 28, so has two rings to go with his resume. Though he has a murky record as head coach, Davis would make a welcome addition at defensive coordinator given the Bucs talented youth. The Bucs need some veteran leadership in some form on this team and Davis fits that bill. With both Mike Sherman and Brad Childress gone to other teams, finding an offensive coordinator will be a bit harder.
