Some savvy reporting and research by the Tampa Bay Times crew of Rick Stroud, Stephen Holder and Joe Smith brought to light why Butch Davis has not been officially hired by the Buccaneers. They explained Davis is set to get paid a severance annually by North Carolina since they terminated his contract. From 2013 to 2015, Davis is set to rake in $1.7 million total. However, the package stipulates he can not coach during that time or else the deal is voided. By taking an “advisory” role with the Bucs, he may be able to sidestep the stipulation and earn an income from the Tar Heels and the Buccaneers. That explains why Butch Davis has not been officially hired yet and explains some of the obstacles the front office will need to overcome. Reading between the lines may give us a better interpretation of where this all leads.

First off, the University of North Carolina is of course going to take exception to the “advisory” role and would win in any type of legal setting. At minimum, they should only be responsible for the difference in salary the Bucs would pay him. While it is unclear how much advisory coaches make, Wade Phillips reportedly earns a league high $700,000 per season at the defensive coordinator position.  UNC  is paying Butch Davis roughly $590,000 per year for the next three years. The Glazer family should not find it hard to pay Davis the same fee and simply crown him the defensive coordinator. Bringing Davis in is a step in the right direction in terms of experience and accomplishment. They would gain back some respect from the fan base and prove to their young players they are serious about their development. Unless Davis would simply rather sit back and collect a free paycheck, hiring him should not be an issue.

At this point, the Glazer family should be willing to overpay for his services if that is what it takes. They were reportedly willing to pay Chip Kelly from Oregon $6 million per year to take the reigns. Between Schiano and Davis’ hypothetical contract, that is only half what they would have coughed up if Kelly didn’t back out at the last minute. Both parties stand to lose too much face if this deal does not get done. If Davis backs out, he looks like a coach simply concerned with double dipping rather than love for the game. It would tarnish his reputation and cause future employers to question whether his commitment is to the team or the paycheck. If the Buccaneers do not make the the deal on their end, the “cheap” label will continue to follow them and only further agitate a loyal fan base which is slowly abandoning the organization.
