The Tampa Bay Lightning recently acquired defenseman Matt Carle off of free agency. Luckily for Carle though he is already familiar with some of the staff and players as he will suit up in Tampa Bay for the second time in his career.

He last played in Tampa Bay in a short stint during the 2008-09 season. He scored one goal and had one assist.

Matt Carle signed with the Lightning for six-years and $33 million coming out to $5.5 million per year.

The Alaska native deserves every bit of this contract too. Last season he scored four goals and totaled 38 points while playing in all 82 games.

This shows that he can get the puck to the back of the net or at least consistently get it in the opponent’s zone and is reliable to last throughout the season.

In the past four years Carle has been with the Philadelphia Flyers where he has averaged just over 34 points per season and has become a tougher body while in the “city of brotherly love” and home of the “broad street bullies” team.

The Lightning has been showing strong dedication to fixing their weak defensive aspect of their game that could make a dramatic change in their upcoming season.

With Carle and the also recently acquired Sami Salo from the Vancouver Canucks Tampa Bay will finally have some decent help for young star Victor Hedman who was the top blue-liner for Tampa last season.

In 471 career games Carle has scored 32 goals, 170 assists and a total 202 points. A consistent scorer from the blue line he averages a point almost every other game and now working with star players like Steven Stamkos, Vincent Lecavalier and Martin St. Louis he could beat his career-high 42 points that he set in 2006-07 with the San Jose Sharks.
