US PRESSWIRE-Thomas Campbell

UPDATE: It’s official! Per Daje himself via Twitter, he has officially changed his commitment to Texas. Minutes ago, he posted the following: ”UT Bound. Blessed.” Huge pick up for the Longhorns.

For the Texas Longhorns, there usually isn’t much suspense surrounding National Signing Day because head football coach Mack Brown typically closes out his recruiting classes early in the recruiting season.

This season however, as signing day looms, Texas is still in the picture for some of the state’s top recruits.

One of the prospects who is in Austin this weekend on an official visit is current TCU commit and 4-star athlete, Daje Johnson.

After Johnson committed to the Horned Frogs last March, the Longhorns didn’t make much of a push for Johnson until just recently. Now, however, just 5 days from signing day, Texas’ chances are looking strong.

After rumors began swirling that Johnson was planning a visit to Austin this weekend, he tweeted on Monday night that he planned on sticking with TCU. Later that night, after a call from Texas co-offensive coordinator, Major Applewhite, the visit was back on, and Texas was back in the game.

Johnson, who hails from Pflugerville, just outside of Austin, is ranked as the state’s 25th overall player on Rivals.com’s Lone Star Top 100.

With his size, (5’10″, 185 lbs), speed, and explosiveness, Johnson could be a contributing factor on either side of the ball wherever he decides to play his college ball.

If he does in fact choose Texas, there are variety of positions at which the coaches would give him a look, including cornerback, safety, slot receiver, all-purpose running back, and return specialist.

Early Saturday, it was reported by ESPN that Daje had indeed switched his committment to Texas, though some Longhorn recruiting sites claim that the reports may have been a bit premature.

Nonetheless, the Longhorns feel good about their chances with Johnson, and many expect a committment from him before the weekend is over.

If he does in fact decide to wear the burnt orange next season, Daje Johnson would be another solid addition to the nation’s #2 recruiting class, the 2012 Texas Longhorns.

6 Rants to “It’s Official: Daje Johnson Has Committed to Texas”

  1. Kris Hughes says:

According to Leila Rahimi with KXAN here he just committed. Good news for the Longhorns.

  2. Lars Hanson says:

With recruiting, nothing is official until that fax gets sent and received by the university. What is great to see is on his twitter he is retweeting all good/bad/hate tweets from all his followers. Really shows how much people get into recruiting, in a not so good way.

  3. Marian Hinton says:

True. Nothing is official until Wednesday! Recruiting certainly doesn’t reflect the best parts of humanity!
