Naashon Hughes left the first Texas Junior Day without an offer. He committed to the Longhorns this morning, still without a full-scholarship offer.

Hughes agreed to greyshirt according to the Killeen Daily Herald and becomes the eleventh, with an asterisk, addition the 2013 Texas recruiting class.

He turned down legitimate scholarships from LSU, South Carolina and Baylor.

As a greyshirt, the talented defensive athlete (and 44th ranked player in the state per 247Sports) from Harker Heights possesses two options. He may enroll in the fall with the rest of his future classmates and pay his own tuition for that semester. Or, Hughes may elect to wait until the spring of 2014 and enroll with a full scholarship.

It’s basically a redshirt semester away from campus unless the prospect wants to be involved in the fall and has the funds to do so.

Usually, greyshirts are reserved for injuries (Tony Hills used one at Texas when he tore his knee up prior to arriving in Austin). In this case, Hughes simply found a home on the 40 Acres and decided to accept whatever avenue made him a Longhorn.

That makes sense as Naashon’s brother, Camrhon, was an early enrollee at Texas in the 2012 recruiting class.

The conversation around Hughes could end up irrelevant if normal attrition occurs. He’s in line for a full offer but with the Longhorns staff utilizing a more measured approach to the 2013 athletes, it’s not there yet.

Since Sunday, Texas hauled in three commits besides Hughes to continue their early recruiting momentum.

Offensive tackle Kent Perkins, athlete Jacorey Warrick and outside linebacker Deoundrei Davis pledged to the Longhorns, all of whom are nationally ranked players.
