The Texas Rangers had momentum heading back to St. Louis after winning Games 4 and 5 of World Series to take a 3-2 lead over the Cardinals. Now it seems like the postponement of Game 6 could kill that momentum. However, the extra day off could be a huge advantage for the Rangers’ pitching rotation. With some additional rest, Rangers lefty Derek Holland could now start a possible Game 7 Friday night.
The Rangers definitely don’t want to have to make that decision; Texas wants to win Game 6 with Colby Lewis on the mound and take the World Series trophy home early. If Game 6 had been played on schedule Wednesday night and the Rangers lost, then Matt Harrison would have started Game 7 on Thursday. That’s not good for Texas.
Harrison was absolutely annihilated by the Cardinals in Game 3 of the Fall Classic, giving up six hits and five runs, three earned, in only three and one-third innings pitched. Holland, on the other hand, pitched an absolutely outstanding contest in a Game 4 Texas victory. Rangers manager Ron Washington now has the chance to start Holland again if Game 7 becomes a reality.
Of course, Washington probably won’t say it outright, but we know he’s thinking it. Holland has been extremely loose lately and it showed during his Game 4 performance. That’s unusual for a second-year pro, but the youngster is the Rangers’ best option if Texas loses Game 6. However, Lewis is a solid option, so Washington may not have to make the call. Regardless, the option is there thanks to the postponement of Game 6.
