Texas Rangers Sign Ron Washington to 2-Year Contract Extension
The Texas Rangers signed manager Ron Washington to a two-year contract extension on Monday. The deal will keep Washington in Texas through the 2014 season, rewarding him for leading the franchise to its first two World Series trips in the past two seasons.
Besides leading the Rangers to American League pennants in 2010 and 2011, Washington boasts the highest winning percentage (.571) of any Rangers manager who managed the team for at least two full seasons.
Although Washington’s tactics have been questioned at times and he was accused of cocaine usage in 2009, he is very popular among Rangers fans and for good reason; Texas was one of Major League Baseball’s worst franchises until Washington came along.
Coupled with new team president Nolan Ryan, Washington has taken a team known for losing and turned it into a perennial title contender. Now he’s guaranteed to wear a Rangers uniform for at least three more seasons for it.
