The Texas Rangers have called up former first round draft pick, Mike Olt, from their Double-A affiliate, the Frisco Roughriders.

The third-baseman, who was selected by the Rangers with the 49th overall pick of 2010 MLB Draft, has long been considered one of the rising stars of the Rangers’ farm system.

Olt’s name had been mentioned often as a possible trade piece, but the Rangers ball club clearly wasn’t ready to part ways with the prospect.

Though he is believed to be one of the top offensive prospects in baseball, Olt has never played about the Double-A level, so the move is a bit perplexing, though it appears to be a good one.

This season, through 94 games, he is currently batting .291/.405/.592  with 27 home runs and 81 RBI.

It’s been a rough month for the Rangers, particularly behind the plate. Though the franchise typically has some of the best batters in all of baseball, it seems as though the entire team has been in a slump that they can’t seem to get out of.

The Rangers, who once held a commanding lead in their division, have seen that lead grow narrower by the day as the Los Angeles Angels and the Oakland A’s , both who have been on fire of late, have been nipping at their heals.

Rangers’ manager Ron Washington and GM Jon Daniels are hoping that the addition of Olt will add a bit of much -needed offensive firepower to the struggling line-up.

Only time will tell how much Olt will help the Texas Rangers, if at all, but something clearly needs to be done to help the offense get back on track.

If Washington and Daniels believe Olt can be the one to help do it, then it’s certainly worth a shot.
