In yesterdays 5-4 over time win over the Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs starting goalie James Reimer got knocked on the head during the first period of play. Reimer played the rest of the first, but what shocked a lot of people is when Jonas Gustavsson took the net for the start of the second period. Now even though Gustavsson won but let in 3 goals over two periods. I expressed in my blog on Saturday that Gustavsson is not the answer even as a back up goalie.

But lucky for leafs fans Reimer suffered a whiplash-like injury according to coach Ron Wilson. Reimer was taken out of the game as a precaution. “He could have finished the game, but this early in the season we didn’t want to risk it,” said Wilson. Wilson also said, “That was clearly an elbow to the head, I don’t know if you’d call it a head shot. But when you knock the goalie’s mask off…” For obvious reasons Wilson was not happy about the incident, but a league source said that the elbow on Reimer appeared to be incidental and likely won’t be subject to review.
