This is not quite what Toronto Maple Leafs fans have been waiting for during the month of January. Even though there are six more days left in the month, die hard leafs fans have been waiting for General Manager Brian Burke to pull a trigger on a big deal that would land Toronto, a star top six forward.

But nevertheless, Brian Burke and John-Michael Liles have come to terms on a deal on an extension that would keep the veteran defenseman in Toronto for four years and $15.5 million. This deal has happened despite the fact that Liles has been out of the line up since December 23rd with concussion-like symptoms.

With new deal, #leafs John-Michael Liles gets $4.25M the next three years and then $2.75M in final year.

‘Not gonna lie…it’s been a pretty good day,’ the defenceman tweeted once reports of the deal surfaced.

The Maple Leafs acquired Liles from the Colorado Avalanche last summer in deal that sent a second-round draft pick in 2012 back to the Colorado. Brian Burke made this acquisition to fill the position of offensive defenseman, which was help by Tomas Kaberle’s. Now Kaberle cap hit is $4.25 million, while Liles cap hit would be $3.875 million.

In Liles’ first season in Toronto, the 31-year-old has registered four goals and 17 assist for 21 points.

As a result of this deal, it is suspected that Brian Burke will move another defenseman before the NHL trade deadline.

I have to believe that the #Leafs would not be re-signing Liles unless they were planning to move another puck-moving D-man before deadline.
