Rumour Mill Finds Derick Brassard Again
At this current moment in the NHL regular season if there is one team that are sellers, it’s the Columbus Blue Jackets. Even though a month or two ago the Blue Jackets were still considered sellers. Nevertheless, over the past couple weeks the media has wrote and discussed about if Rick Nash or Jeff Carter trade to the Toronto Maple Leafs would be realistic or even make sense.
Now let’s look a young player who has not received much attention on the rumour mill this year.
Derick Brassard, who is a player I previously wrote about in early December. This 24-year-old former first-round draft pick (6th overall in 2006) has tons of potential, though has never panned out since being drafted by Columbus in 2006.
Brassard’s high point was in 2010/11 where he registered 17 goals and 30 assist. But Brassard has fallen off the edge this year with only 22 points through 48 games; his +/- is terrible, but hey, its the Blue Jackets. With that Brassard is on pace for 33 points this season.
Could a Brassard to Toronto deal work?
Why this deal would happen;
Brassard has an acceptable $3.2 million per season contact that finishes after the 2013/14 season. Brassard who is a natural center, can also play wing, which fits the Maple Leafs squad who have a few centers that do play on the wing.
Blue Jackets need some serious help on defense and with the Maple Leafs’ defense core having several quality defenders, is what makes Toronto and Columbus possible trading partners.
Why this deal would not happen;
If either Nash or Carter gets shipped out of Ohio before the NHL trade deadline, Brassard becomes a player that is much more important part to this organization.
Depends on whether Brian Burke thinks Brassard is worth wild trading for. Who knows? The 2010/11 season could be the best we’ve seen of Brassard. Or Brassard could be a super late bloomer and there are better seasons to come.
