MLB Injuries: Bryce Harper, Jose Altuve Suffer Scary Collisions

When you hear the term “subluxed” as a diagnosis for a sports injury, it just makes you cringe even though you don’t know what it means. Viewers of the Houston Astros-Detroit Tigers game cringed when Astros second baseman Jose Altuve collided with teammate Jimmy Paredes in shallow right field while tracking down a fly ball. The hit partially dislocated Altuve’s jaw (the definition of subluxed), so this guy might be eating only mashed potatoes for a while.

Not long after that, Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper ran face first into the right field fence and left the game against the Los Angeles Dodgers with blood dripping from his neck. The bottom of his chin went full speed into the chain link fence and cut him up pretty bad, although he wasn’t diagnosed with a concussion.

What’s weird about Harper’s hit was that he pulled up well after he was into the warning track as if he thought he still had several feet to go. Watching him run face first into the wall was a little bizarre, but also very scary because he could have been hurt a lot worse.

Both Altuve and Harper are expected to be okay, but Monday night reminded us just how dangerous sports can be, including baseball.
