Stephen Strasburg Will Throw 180 Innings This Year?
With all the hype surrounding Stephen Strasburg and his innings limits, new theories are being thrown around as Strasburg has thrown 133 innings. The Washington Nationals will be extending Strasburg to 180 innings or so, and plan on skipping some starts in September. Along with that 180 innings, Strasburg will not pitch at ALL this winter (no surprise) and we’ll see if that works.
I 100% disagree with this theory. Look, I pitched at a high level. I not only had Tommy John Surgery, but labrum surgery, and a second scope of the elbow. All pitchers have the same risk. Whether they throw 100 innings, or 300 innings, throwing a baseball is 100% terrible on your arm. To strengthen one’s arm, one has to throw. The body has to get used to throwing 250 plus innings which means a pitcher has to train himself to do it. The problem the Nationals have, is Stephen Strasburg is training his body to throw 150-200 innings, and when he exceeds it for the first time, he actually gives himself more of a chance to get hurt. Throw in his mechanical flaws, Stephen Strasburg is the definition of a red flag.
So why shut him down? If’ he’s always going to be a red flag, wouldn’t it make sense to pitch him this year, in hopes of bringing a world series to Washington? Don’t the fans deserve that? The franchise? Shutting him down to protect him for next year when he continues to have red flags is borderline idiotic. If the Nationals shut him down, and Strasburg STILL gets hurt, how is that going to make the Nationals look? How will their fan base feel?
They’re really playing with fire here, but I’m 100% certain they’re making the wrong decision.
