The old adage in sports is, “You can’t lose your job to an injury”.  But what if you don’t have the job yet?  Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kevin Kolb got injured…again…getting slammed to the turf and suffering a rib contusion early in the first quarter of the 2012 Hall of Fame Game against the New Orleans Saints.

Kolb is in the middle of an open quarterback battle for the staring position with John Skelton, and tonight’s injury may have opened the door for Skelton to take lead in that scrum.

Originally Kolb was thought to be the favorite to win the starting spot at quarterback, but recent rumblings have shed some doubt on his hold on that his top-dog status.

In a 17-10 loss to the Saints, Kolb started off with an interception on his first pass of the night, on what was a very poorly thrown ball and a terrible read on the defense.  He finished the night 1 for 4, with the single interception. As Kolb left the field, Skelton tried to give him a semi-high-five, but was ignored by the injured teammate.

Skelton, on the other hand, took the Cardinals on a successful offensive drive, leading to a touchdown.  He finished the game 4 for 6 for 32 yards, and looked confident and poised while in the game.

Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt now has to weigh what Arizona gave up to get Kolb in 2011, against his propensity for injuries and spotty play since coming over from the Philadelphia Eagles.

To complicate matters even more, Cardinals sixth-round pick Ryan Lindley topped the Arizona passing stats for the night, going 10 for 21, and 118 yards.

And who said the most interesting quarterback battle was in New York?
