UFC on Fox will not disappoint.
MMA has finally garnered the national showcase that it deserves.
The sport flourishes with young males- the demographics that matter in terms of advertising dollars- and the big bucks of national television have finally arrived.
Which bring us to Saturday night on Fox.
UFC president, Dana White, is hoping UFC on Fox 2 will discover a happy medium between Junior dos Santos’s brisk knockout of Cain Velasquez and the “lay and pray” method that many UFC fighters abide by. His objective is to grow the game. Both of the aforementioned outcomes could become a slight hindrance to that objective.
White has put his best foot forward with a successful blend of upwardly mobile fighters looking to take the next step towards a title, versus a group of experienced veterans who want to make a statement in their respective divisions.
Davis vs Evans
Rashad Evans, perhaps the most well rounded fighter in UFC, will face the talented Phil Davis in the 205 weight division.
Davis is a dominant wrestler but is so is Evans. With fighters this closely matched with their fastball, the contest could come down to experience and striking. Unfortunately for Davis, Evans is better in both categories.
Evans technical striking ability will allow him to set up his take downs. From there Evans will be able to control the fight by holding Davis on his back and hurting him with blows from the top.
Evans is also hell-bent on regaining his title by supplanting his former friend and current champion, John “Bones” Jones. The relationship has become strained recently and provides an interesting dynamic should Evans pull off the victory Saturday night.
Evans has waged many battles on the big stage. Davis doesn’t own the experience of knocking out “The Iceman” or fighting Tito Ortiz to a draw early in his career.
Those battles, I believe, are the deciding factor.
Evans will win with a second round TKO via ground and pound.
Sonnen vs Bisping
Michael Bisping is the biggest jerk in the UFC but no one can deny that he is a very talented fighter. After brutalizing Mayhem Miller Bisping proved that a step-up in talent is warrented.
Well, be careful of what you wish for.
Chael Sonnen is a bad dude .
He is coming off a complete dismantling of Brian Stann and did I mention that Sonnen is a bad dude.
Sonnen is amongst the best wrestlers in the UFC. He will get Bisping to the ground over and over and rain a steady barrage of elbows and fists down upon him.
This pick is easy. Sonnen retains the Number 1 contender ranking. He wins by unanimous decision and sets up a rematch up with Anderson Silva.
Maia vs Weidman
I have a lot of respect for Damian Maia and his approach to fighting. But Weidman’s strength and athleticism will prove to be a huge obstacle.
If Weidman exhibits good submission defense -which is easier said than done I guess- he should have no problem controlling the fight.
Weidman is on a collision course with the greats of the 185 division.
Weidman wins by split decision
So get your popcorn ready, put your feet up on the couch and enjoy the great fights on Saturday.
