Is Theo Epstein Playing the Blue Jays Against the Red Sox in the Race for Matt Garza?

I’ll be honest here, I don’t get the excitement over Matt Garza. Is it his stuff? Eh. I mean he’s got good stuff but he’s not as good as advertised. Is it his youth? Yeah probably. Is he worth 65 million over 4-5 years? No chance.  With the Toronto Blue Jays now being heavily rumored to be interested in Garza, the Boston Red Sox have no choice but to kick some tires because everyone else in the division is seemingly getting better.

That makes me want to ask the question: Is Theo Epstein driving up Garza’s value by playing Toronto against Boston? Heck yeah he is!

There is no secret that both of these teams need pitching, and there is no secret that either of these teams could be a postseason contender with another arm. With both teams wanting the upper hands, it’ll be interesting to see who blinks first.

The Chicago Cubs are in the drivers seat right now. They don’t need Garza. Based on the direction of the team getting blown up- Garza is pointless so if they could pick up a 4 or 5 player package of high quality minor leaguers, heck yeah! That would be one heck of a deal.

It’s exciting to see Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer jump in and understand what it’s going to take. Building from the ground up appears to be the priority and I have been wanting that for a few years now. I love the direction, I love the dedication, and I love the fact Theo and Jed appear to trust the process.

I’m very excited and hope the Cubs can trade Garza for the packages that are being rumored about.

You think your going to get a 4 or 5 player package you are sadly mistaken. You will likely fetch 1 good prospect + 2 mid level guys for Garza.

Than your mistaken that the Cubs are going to trade Garza.

He’ll only be traded if the Cubs get a package similar to what they gave up, and seeing as the market was set for talent in terms of the Gio Gonzalez and Mat Latos trades.

      • J Bloom says:

Garza shouldn’t be worth as much purely because of comparative age and that he has 2 years until free agency.

Latos is 24, under control until 2015.
Gonzalez is a 26 year old under control until 2015,

I don’t think Garza was worth what the Cubs gave up for him, and I’ve stated that a million times…Either way, Garza’s market is COMPARABLE to that of Gio Gonzalez…Latos is stretching it- but Epstein and Jed Hoyer have to use that as the basis.

If the Cubs don’t get that price- they aren’t going to deal him.

If the Cubs overpaid for Garza that’s their problem. Jays will not give more than 1 prospect, a disposble veteran, and a bat. Otherwise, Cubs can keep’em we don’t want ‘em, his salary is too fat for me.

I didn’t realize you made the decisions for the Blue Jays- and spoke for the organization.

As it stands- the Cubs are demanding a top pitching prospect (McGuire?, Drabek?), and Anthony Gose as the two main pieces.

Whether a deal happens or doesn’t happen…isn’t really the point.

The point is- if the Blue Jays back off and Boston pulls the trigger- the Jays will once again be watching the postseason from the couch (as a Cubs fan, I’ll keep that seat warm for ya.)

If the Jays pull the trigger, I think they could be a potent playoff contender because as it stands- your one starter short of contending and relying on kids is always risky. If Drabek doesn’t get it together and Maguire flounders…no chance.

Pros and Cons of being a GM.

Saying this wont happen is pretty ignorant
