At 5-14, the Kansas City Royals are tied for the worst record in the majors. This was supposed to be a promising year for the Royals, as their top hitting prospects were getting a chance to play in the majors. Additionally, they had some more exciting prospects in the upper minors who were nearly major league ready. However it’s been one disappointment after another this season, and it doesn’t get any better when you realize how the Royals have been over the past 27 years. They last reached the playoffs in 1985, winning the World Series in 7 games.

Things have been so bad for the Royals, that they’ve only been 500 or better once since 1995. They’ve won 77 games once since 1995, and during that time they’ve often been one of the worst teams in the majors.

As Big League Stew pointed out, things are so awful for the Royals that their fans have opted to read a book over watching the Royals play. That’s right – a fan sitting in the first row behind home plate decided that he would be more entertained by reading then watching a Royals game. Let’s keep in mind those are pretty expensive seats too. And while I’ll be the first person to support that we need to read more, it’s pretty embarrassing that someone chose to read a novel over watching a baseball game.

But such is life for a fan of the Royals. Their team hasn’t been 500+ since 2003, and despite all the optimism surrounding the club they’ve seemingly thrown it all away with a 12 game losing streak. The worst part about that losing streak? 10 of those games were played at home, meaning the Royals couldn’t win a single game in front of their own fans.

It’s little comfort that the offence has been slightly above average to this point. With a wRC+ of 103, there is hope that the offence should improve. The pitching is another story entirely, and it’s going to take some significant moves in order to turn them into an average pitching staff.

Sadly, the picture of a man choosing to read a novel instead of watching the Royals shows just what a train wreck they’ve become. The Royals, a once proud franchise, have been reduced to the punch line of a bad joke. It’s going to take a lot of time and effort, and a winning season, in order to gain back the passionate fans they’ve lost thanks to years of pathetic baseball.
