San Francisco Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval has reportedly fractured his left hand after a loss against the Miami Marlins Wednesday night.

Sandoval fractured the hamate bone in his left hand which means he could miss significant playing time. Sandoval left the game in the seventh inning after feeling pain while swinging the bat.

“He took a swing and had quite a bit of pain and had to come out,” manager Bruce Bochy said after Wednesday’s game. “There’s a lot of concern here. We know what this guy means to our club and our offense.”

The Giants are currently battling the red-hot Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West and will need Sandoval to be healthy in order to have any chance at winning the division. He is second on the team behind catcher Buster Posey in batting average (.316) and is first in home runs (5), RBI (15), hits (16) and total bases (51).

Sandoval’s recovery timetable is still undetermined but he will most likely miss at least a month with the injury. Ironically, Sandoval fractured the hamate bone in his right hand just under a year ago. He had to undergo surgery which forced him to miss 41 games. San Francisco is hoping he will avoid surgery but it does not seem likely.

The Giants are currently in fourth place and 4.5 games back of the Dodgers in the NL West. There is no doubt their offensive production will go done without Sandoval which means it is up to the pitching staff to keep the team afloat.
