Jay Cutler is My #1 Choice at QB

I’m going to disclaimer this piece by saying that there’s at least three quarterbacks in the NFL that are better than Jay Cutler. But for the Chicago Bears, he’d be my top choice. I call this The Ben Roethlisberger Effect.

What does this mean? Big Ben also isn’t one of the top three quarterbacks in football, but he’s a perfect fit for the Steelers. Cutler has become a perfect fit for the Bears. He’s adjusted to the offense and can utilize the players around him. He’s gelled with the offensive players and really runs this team. It’s taken him a few years but his cohesiveness with this team becomes more obvious by the game. That’s the definition of a franchise quarterback and Cutler has become one.

Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady and Drew Brees are clearly the class of the NFL. All three had time to develop with their teams. Cutler has finally had time to do so as well. With a little more time and perhaps a franchise wide receiver Cutler may sneak on this list. However, it can’t be ignored that Cutler went to the NFC Championship game last year and has the Bears playing well this one as well. That’s the sign of a quarterback that fits the team he plays for on Sundays.

15 Rants to “Jay Cutler is My #1 Choice at QB”

  1. Fred Balbo says:

The need for a franchise wide receiver is nothing new. The Bears had one in 85 by the name of Willy Gault, forgive me Willy if I miss spelled your name. Cutler is a good QB but needs the other tools to become a great one. McMann wasn’t a great QB but he had the players around him that he needed to be an if not great QB than at least a semi/great QB that was mistreated disrespected by the Bears front office. We now have the oppourtunity to become one of the elite teams in the NFL if the front office will do what is needed. Get a wide receiver that will compliment the running game and can hold on to the ball or at the very least catch it when it’s in their hands. As for our offensive coordinator, he’s acting like a child. Sunday he seemed to be saying, ok, you want to run the football, we’ll run the football. In situations that he clearly should have called a passing play, he’d call for a run, and I’m not talking 3rd and 8 or 12. I didn’t like the choice of Martz when he was hired and I’ve seen nothing to change my mind. I don’t want the Bears to become another (GREATEST SHOW ON TURF)!!! We are the Chicago Bears and we run the football 1st and throw it at oppourtune times. I like cutler as our QB, I only hope he survives long enough for the Bears to aquire a offensive line. That’s my rant. GO BEARS.

  2. Andrew J says:

Just wanted to note that Brees won his superbowl his first year in new orleans and he was spectacular that year so to say his time developing with his team made him great is not entirely true because he was great right away. I think of jay cutler as a quarterback in a class of his own. Hes either great or he’s average which is fine by me because we have a great D and running back. I think anybody would pick rodgers or brady first but Id rather have cutler than a lot of other QB’s.

    • Chicago Bear Jew says:

That’s one of the reasons Brees is ahead of Cutler on my list. I’m not sure if Brees would win a Super Bowl in Chicago.

  3. Jay Cutler says:

Even I think this is ludicrous

  4. bearssth says:

You’re absolutely right about Cutler. He’s adjust to being a quarterback in this system and for this city. He might not be among the leaders (statistically) but has what it takes to be successful.

  5. tori says:

I am going to have to disagree with you… Big Ben not in the top 3??? C’mon man!!! I’m not a steelers fan but I would gladly take him as a qb anytime, I’d take him over Tom Brady! Big ben will play with a boot on his broken foot and still win you the game, highly doubt your “top 3″ will do that. If you’re talking elite qb in of all time my top 3 would be Montana, Unitas and Young/Elway(toss up) if you’re talking now my top 3 are A.Rod, Tom Brady and a toss up betwen Big Ben and gotta say it.. Tebow(the guy just wins)
@Fred – Mcmahon didn’t have the Cutler cannon but he had smarts and limited his mistakes, he knew he had a great defense. He didn’t need to throw a bunch of yards he had Sweetness. You’re right Mcmahon proved that in chicago you don’t have to be a great qb to win just a smart one.

  6. Nero says:

    For Andrew J,

Brees did not win the SB his first year (2006) with New Orleans, he lost the NFC Championship to the Bears. In 2007 and 2008 the Saints finished 7-9 both seasons. They won in his fourth season. Last year he threw 22 interceptions, the most in his career. Brees is a good guy, he’s had a nice career and is probably one of the best in the NFL right now but career wise he’s not Montana or Brady great, not even Elway or Marino great. Over time depending on the stability of the system and how the Bears handle Cutler and the pieces they put around him will determine if he can become great. He has the potential but that’s all it is right now.

I stand corrected but he was still a perennial 4000++ yard passer right when he got there so i think my point is still valid.

As for Roesthlisberger, hes kinda the wildcard in that its tough to say where he is among the elites, but he certainly is elite. Id prolly say hes at least 4th best qb right now after Rodgers, brady and brees in that order to me (Peyton would be there too if he were healthy). After those 4 qbs its kinda tough for me to rank the qbs. theyre all above average but not spectacular. Cutler is definitely one of those 5-10 qbs that are usually good occasionally great (such as Eli manning, schaub, ryan, fitzpatrick, Romo, Hasselbeck, Vick, Newton, Flacco among some others I’m sure) which is ok because our defense, special teams and running back picks up his slack. I think Cutler would be better off if he had more say in the offense i.e. letting him audible at the line of scrimmage, more bootlegs and 3-5 step drops among other things.

Tebow has been kinda fun to watch everytime ive seen him because hes consistently ridiculously awful and great in the same game. But hes still not a good nfl quarterback yet and i’m not sold he ever will be. Right now hes taking advantage of teams that havent been use to defending against a college style offense but i doubt that will last long.
Newton is a stud and probably the elite qb of the future to me.

      • Chicago Bear Jew says:

I’m a Cam Newton fan. Saw him against the Bears and he’s a tough smart kid. Tebow’s final drive against the Jets was Rex Ryan’s firing moment. How he couldn’t stop that methodically bad drive is beyond me? But Tebow is getting wins. Can’t take that away from him.

  8. Robert McGlinchey says:

I support Cutler. I don’t understand the obsession of wanting a super star QB in Chicago.

    • Andrew J says:

For me the obsession isnt with a superstar quarterback but a consistently pretty good qb that gives us a chance to win games against any team any sunday. Superstar qbs are in short supply (Brees, P. Manning, Brady, Rodgers, and possibly rivers prior to this year). Having one would be great but not necesary to win championships regardless of what ESPN will tell you. I like the superstars we have in Peppers, Urlacher and Forte.

  9. Heather j says:

Jay Cutler is my favor QB! For the Bears!
