I’ve been one of Lovie Smith’s biggest critics. He’s been poor with challenges, time outs and personnel decisions. But this season, Smith has turned the corner. He’s won me over and has become one of the best coaches in the NFL.

Today, everyone involved with the Chicago Bears from players to fans needed a leader and we found it. Smith was cool and confident when he told everyone that this team will continue its course the remainder of the season. This wasn’t someone blowing smoke up our rear ends; he was confident and believable. While I am not naive to the fact that Jay Cutler will be missed, I feel like this group of coaches and players are as capable as any to work through this challenge.

One of the things that I’ve always been most impressed about with Smith is his ability to remain calm, cool and collected. Even when it appears the wheels are falling off, Smith maintains a steady presence. Many of us remember Mike Ditka acting like a maniac on the sidelines. As entertaining as it was, many of his ex-players resented the way he acted. On the other hand, you’ll rarely if ever hear a player criticize Smith. Smith isn’t a push-over with his players; but he will keep his criticisms private. At the same time, he isn’t afraid to send a message like he did with Chris Harris. Notice how the team has responded since he was released…

While I think the Bears chances of landing at the Super Bowl took a bad turn yesterday, I do think that if any team can overcome this problem, it is the Chicago Bears. There’s a lot of leadership and talent still on this roster. No matter what the remainder of the season holds, these guys are winners in my book. It all starts with their general.
