DISCLAIMER…This has nothing to do with the quality of the football team. Obviously the Packers are the better football team. So any idiots that want to respond to this with you’re a bitter Bears fan is banned from reading any further…

Stock for the Green Bay Packers went on sale this morning. For $250 plus a $25 dollar shipping and handling fee, people could buy shares of stock in the Packers. What does this stock exactly get you? The stock has no financial value and can’t be resold. The stockholder can vote on team business, including the board of directors, and attend annual meetings. So basically, you are getting a piece of paper that allows you to vote on certain aspects of the team’s business and attend an annual meeting. Fans are buying a lifetime pass to attend an annual meeting. No indication of how much weight each stock holder’s vote actually holds was made available.

This is a free country and people are allowed to spend their money on anything he or she deems appropriate. After interacting with people on Twitter, I am shocked at the responses I’ve been hearing. Let’s call this what it is; a donation to a profitable business. It’s fine if you want to give them more money. Considering the ownership around the league locked out the players to negotiate a more-favorable contract, I would say that this fascination with a franchise that is supposedly publicly owned really is a misnomer. The Green Bay Packers are doing very well, and anyone that purchased stock just made things a lot nicer for this franchise.

Some feel that this will pay for the expansion of Lambeau Field, but it is my understanding that the last round of renovations are coming out of local taxpayers pockets, or at least that is what several fans told me last season. If this indeed does cover the expense of expanding Lambeau Field, you can guarantee that the state of Wisconsin will also contribute to this cause. So in essence, taxes will go up on top of the $275 that the team collected from each individual that purchased a share of Packers stock.

I own stock in a few companies. If I am unhappy with the direction of a company, I can sell the stock. In the case of the Packers, this isn’t really stock. It cannot be sold and loses its value upon purchase. So call it a free lifetime pass to the annual meeting. For $275, it is probably worth it to some folks. For me, I view this as giving money to Montgomery Burns. The rich get richer…

I love sports. But I realize that sports is a business. Today just proves what P.T. Barnum supposedly said…there’s a sucker born every minute!

  1. Jayme Joers says:

I couldn’t really get to the argument you’re trying to make after the grammar mistakes in your third sentence. It is painful to read.

    • Chicago Bear Jew says:

Thanks for the editing help…and frankly, you can stop reading my blog if it’s so painful to read. I really don’t need to impress you. So go eat more cheese…

  2. RAM says:

Chicago Bear Jew, you are a huge fan of the Bears. You love to see them win and show a fanatical support for your team. There are many people who do not understand why you would “waste” so much of your time and money on something so unproductive. So give it a rest and let the cheeseheads enjoy supporting there team they way they want to.

    • Chicago Bear Jew says:

      I’ve just started pal

      • RAM says:

If it makes you sleep better at night to tear down an organization that represents what is good in sports then we’re not pals. I’m gone.

        • Chicago Bear Jew says:

How many Packers fans used Brett Favre as the example of what it meant to be a Green Bay Packer? That organization just asked people to donate $275 to increasing the size of a stadium so they could increase revenue. And that’s what’s right about sports? You’re too dense to read my blog so I suggest you find something else to do with your time and Internet connection. You’re banned.

        • Chicago Bear Jew says:

According to Packers fans, Brett Favre was a shining example of what it meant to be a Packer. How’d that turn out? Don’t give me that model franchise BS. The Packers are a football team. The fans wanted to donate $275 to the team, it’s their choice. But to call that stock is a joke and a disgrace. My blog is way above your comprehension level. You’re banned.
