Sam Hurd came to the Chicago Bears with high hopes and apparently higher aspirations. According to http://www.foxsports.com, he was taken into Federal custody Thursday attempting to be an apparent drug lord in Chicago. The Federal complaint claims Hurd told a Federal Agent that he was interested in buying five to 10 kilograms of cocaine and 1,000 pounds of marijuana per week to distribute.

The details are still coming to the surface about this story. According to the same www.foxsports.com report, this drug ring has been going on for some time and other NFL players are involved in the action.  This investigation began in July when an unidentified accomplice of Hurd attempted to secure five-kilograms of cocaine on Hurd’s behalf. The day before he signed a three-year  deal with the Chicago Bears, Hurd agreed to meet and with Homeland Security about a car he owned being seized with over $88,000 in the vehicle.

Obviously, everyone in our wonderful country is innocent until proven guilty. In the case of Hurd, it is very difficult to dispute an attempt to purchase drugs from a Federal officer. The NFL has attempted to not struggle with the image problems of the NBA, but if this involves numerous NFL players, the league will have to go into cleanup mode quickly. There’s no telling who or what this might involve. But one thing is for sure, it’s really not what the doctor ordered for the NFL.

Hurd has been a standout on special teams this season. He’s seen some action with the offense, but his biggest contributions have been with the kickoff and punt units.
