I think Chicago Bears General Manager Jerry Angelo was gone after this season before yesterday occurred. But certainly the Sam Hurd arrest on massive drug-trafficking charges may be the final nail in the coffin.

It wasn’t as if there wasn’t a warning before the arrest yesterday. A car belonging to Hurd raised suspicion with Homeland Security when it was found with over $88,000 in it the day before he signed with the Bears. Considering how dumb Hurd was in his attempt to be a drug lord, I have to believe that others within this organization knew nothing about Hurd’s efforts.

It’s easy to pile on Angelo these days because with this exception of defensive tackle Amobi Okoye and punter Adam Podlesh, all of his other moves have proven to be disasters. Roy Williams and Marion Barber have made crucial mistakes that have cost the Bears their last two games. His decision not to bring in a proven veteran back-up quarterback has been costly as well. Not resigning safety Danieal Manning remains a mystery despite being way under the salary cap.

The latest Hurd news can’t go unnoticed by new team CEO George McCaskey and company. The Bears have always been concerned with appearance, and Hurd just put a huge black eye on the organization. Someone has to be accountable for this and the collapse of the organization, and it’s my belief it will be Angelo. Team President Ted Phillips should probably go as well, but I’m not keeping my hopes too high. McCaskey may be taking a similar approach to Tom Ricketts with the Chicago Cubs; not upsetting the apple cart immediately. Now that he’s had a year on the job, hopefully he recognizes the changes that need to be made within the organization. While McCaskey was the Ticket Manager before being promoted to CEO, I can’t imagine he’s blind to the total collapse of this team. While losing Jay Cutler and Matt Forte hurt, they’ve lost two games they should have won with the right one-or-two personnel moves. Business as usual at Halas Hall just ain’t getting it done anymore.
