Mike DiNovo-US PRESSWIRE

In breaking news, RB Marion Barber announced he would retire from the NFL after 7 seasons. Barber made his name with the Dallas Cowboys as he played there for 6 seasons. As you know, his 7th season was with the Chicago Bears. He’s only 28 years old and is too young to retire. That’s one reason I’m surprise he announce that he would be retiring. He wasn’t a bad running back, especially as a back-up. He made his money as a red-zone – goal line running back. As he was known for being a downhill runner and a back who tries to plow over the defender.

Barber was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the 4th round of the 2005 draft. During Barber’s 7 years in the NFL, he had a career 4,780 rushing yards, 4.1 yards per carry, 53 rushing touchdowns, 1,330 receiving yards, 6 receiving touchdowns and 16 fumbles (6 lost). Also, he was a 2007 Pro Bowler for the Dallas Cowboys.

I didn’t think Barber was that bad with the Bears, but that game against the Denver Broncos made him hated in Chicago. That game was where he was supposed to run out the clock and he ran out of bounds. Also, the Bears were about to score in overtime and Barber fumbled the ball (the Broncos recovered). The Bears eventually lost the game on the fumble by Barber. Besides that game and him being injured for games, I thought he did well and was a useful back.

It’s not like Barber had no interest on the market, Vaughn Mcclure of the Chicago Tribune was hearing the St. Louis Rams and Philadelphia Eagles were possible landing spots for him.

The Bears were expected to release Marion Barber soon and he made the Bears job easy by retiring. I’m not 100% positive, but I think the Bears still saved 1.7 million in cap space. I believe it’s the same as if he was released.

I’m actually sad for Barber and think he still has some gas left in him. Let’s see if he returns … that’s a strong possibility and people think he may. I wish the best to Barber now and him going forward!
