The Blackhawks lost their eighth consecutive game in a pretty lifeless effort against the Phoenix Coyotes on Saturday. But there was one positive to pull, at it didn’t have anything to do with the guys on the ice.

Prior to the game, the Coyotes inducted Jeremy Roenick into their Ring of Honor. He joined fellow former Coyote Keith Tkachuk, who was also inducted earlier this year.

Roenick spent five seasons with the Coyotes, from 1996 to 2001, before rejoining the team for the 2006-2007 season. He helped put the Coyotes on the map as an NHL franchise.

But anyone who knows Jeremy Roenick knows that his heart is really in Chicago. He thanked the Hawks for being a part of the ceremony and now is hoping that the Blackhawks will go the route of the Coyotes and immortalize him at the United Center.

Roenick spent the first eight years of his Hall of Fame  NHL career in Chicago. He notched 267 goals and 329 assists in his career with the Hawks, including a season of 103 points (53 G, 50 A) when the Blackhawks went to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1991-92.

He’s hopeful and confident that his number will eventually be hanging from the rafters at the Madhouse:

“Without question that is a huge goal of mine, to be retired in Chicago,” Roenick said Saturday night before the Hawks took on the Coyotes. “I think it’s the best honor that can be bestowed on you. As an athlete with the exception of the Hall of Fame this is by far the best thing bestowed upon you. And if its more than one team, really? Never in a million years would have thought that. My numbers speak for themselves in Chicago. When you talk about 100 years of a sports team, you have three people ever to score 50 goals … I think we have a good enough relationship now after 20 years. We’ll get there.”

I tend to agree with Roenick. It’s only a matter of time before that no. 27 is hanging in Chicago. But for now, the Hawks need to be concerned with getting two points before anything else.
