According to ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick, the Cubs could be ready to step up their pursuit of free agent first baseman Prince Fielder.
All fronts have been pretty quiet recently in regard to the free agent slugger, with the Cubs among Fielder’s field of suitors that includes the likes of Texas, Seattle, and Toronto.
As Crasnick says, it looks like the Cubs could be ready to make a big push for Fielder:
Fielder is easily the best player left on the market and quite possibly the best slugger that will hit the market in the next few years. That’s likely one of the factors in the Cubs pursuing Fielder, despite that ‘buy low’ mentality that they have carried into the offseason.
It’s also still not known whether or not the Cubs won the bid on Japanese hurler Yu Darvish. However, that doesn’t appear to be a factor in whether or not the Cubs pursue Fielder, though it would be quite the investment for an organization that has insisted that there are no quick fixes.
We should know who won the Darvish bidding at any time now, but right now the Cubs focus appears to be on Fielder as they look to lock down their first base situation for the next number of years.
