After months of rampant trade rumors involving Chicago Cubs centerfielder Marlon Byrd, it’s looking like a trade is finally close to being a reality.

It should come as no surprise that the team Marlon Byrd could be headed to is the Boston Red Sox. Not because of Theo Epstein‘s history with the team, but because they are in desperate need of some outfield help.

According to several reports, the Cubs and Red Sox are discussing a deal that would send Byrd to Boston, though what the Cubs would be receiving is unclear. Boston is currently rolling with an outfield that includes Ryan Sweeney, Cody Ross, and Darnell McDonald. Yikes.

Byrd has been the subject of trade rumors all offseason, which was one that saw several players find their way off the North Side, including Aramis Ramirez, Carlos Pena, and Carlos Zambrano. Alfonso Soriano‘s name also popped up in talks, but his contract quickly killed any discussions the Cubs might have had.

But Byrd was seen as a guy that could be easily traded. He’s a very good fielder out there in center, can play multiple positions in the outfield, and is a fantastic presence in the clubhouse. His normally steady bat, though, hasn’t been found yet this season, as he’s just 3-for-43 on the season.

It’s hard to imagine the Cubs getting much back for Byrd, regardless of what he’s hitting right now. He’s not a big time player, but he’s a great guy to have on a contender, though it remains to be seen if the Red Sox actually are contenders.

Once the move takes place, don’t expect Brett Jackson to be immediately called up to replace him. The Cubs have Tony Campana in Chicago and will likely piece together an outfield and keep Jackson in Iowa for the time being.

Stay tuned as this trade sounds like it could happen before Sunday.
