On Monday, Cincinnati Bengals running back Cedric Benson pleaded no contest for assault for his involvement with a fight at Annie’s West in Austin, Texas from back in 2010. Benson was sentenced to 20 days in jail and will turn himself into police on October 17 (the day after the Bengals begin their bye week), according to Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Reports first indicated that Benson punched a bartender at Annie’s West after refusing to be escorted out the place following a fight between him and another person. Of course, Benson has been involved with numerous off-the-field incidents over the years–so it should be no surprise that he’s receiving this type of punishment this time around.
Benson has played a key role in the Bengals’ ground game since signing with the team during the 2008 season and has rushed for 2,362 yards and 13 touchdowns over the last two seasons. As Reedy points out, Benson would only miss one or two practices with the team and should return with enough time to prepare for the team’s matchup against the Seattle Seahawks on October 30–so this sentence won’t have that much of an impact on Benson’s 2011 season when it comes to actually missing games.
