Racist Fan Throws Banana Peel at Wayne Simmonds During Tonight’s Game
It’s a shame that society hasn’t evolved to the point where ignorant people are stamped out. Racism is apparently still alive and well. Deadspin is reporting that during tonight’s preseason game, Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds had a banana peel thrown at him as skated in for a shootout attempt in a 4-3 loss. Simmonds was unaffected by this attempt and managed to make his shot.
The fact that behavior like this still exists sickens me. Racism still plays a large role in hockey in soccer. I watched a video early this semester for class that showed black soccer players deal with racist chants all the time. It baffles me that someone thought throwing a banana peel at Simmonds would be a good idea. Is a banana peel going to intimidate him? How well off are you that you think that you can try to degrade someone who is trying to live out their dream?
Rumors have been flying that there was multiple attempts to hit Simmonds with a banana, which is even worse. Apparently society has not moved to the point where stupidity is stopped before it can occur. I hope whoever threw the banana is happy. Simmonds was unaffected by this attempt at intimidation, which is nice to see. Racism and intimidation are only effective if they gather a reaction. I give major props to Simmonds for maintaining his composure.
