Boston Craigslist Offers Fans Unique Opportunity
Anthony Gruppuso-US PRESSWIRE

Last night the Boston Red Sox posted on Craigslist the need for a starting pitcher for Wednesday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles. Apparently, with the Red Sox recent struggles the organization is looking for any distraction from baseball. General Manager Theo Epstein and company understand the complexity behind Red Sox Nation and their rabid fan base, therefore why not make an offer not many could refuse?

If you have not seen the listing on Craigslist, here it is…

“The Boston Red Sox, a historic baseball franchise, is looking for a starting pitcher for Wednesday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles. Looking for someone who can

-Get outs

-Not walk people

-Prevent runs from scoring

-Shake off the idea that your name could be associated with failure for the rest of your life if you do not perform well

Respond to this ad with a resume or portfolio, and preferably a link to your Baseball Reference page. No Tomkos.”

As bizarre a listing as this may be, one has to admit the obvious humor behind it. The same day the “The Bartman Story” aired on ESPN, no sooner did this ad get posted. It seems fitting to say the least, when a story like this involves one of the most storied franchises associated with bad luck and unfortunate circumstances.

A few years ago an independent minor league baseball team in the Chicagoland area, the Schuamburg Flyers, made quite a splash with one of their promotions. The Flyers offered fans the unique opportunity to make decisions for the manager….during games! Basically, fans voted for what they wanted the manager to do during the game, then he had no choice but to follow the promotion/fans and oblige.

This instance with the Red Sox is a bit different. Boston is a historic franchise, not to mention a Major League Baseball team that annually makes runs toward a title. Just a few weeks ago, the Red Sox were sitting comfortably ahead of the Rays in the wild card race and final spot for the playoffs. Now, they see themselves tied with Tampa Bay with just one game remaining in the regular season. Obviously…it’s the time of the year to panic in Boston.

Whether people take the post on Craigslist as a joke or not, it shows how far we have come in our media-frenzied society. I sure would love to see the Boston Red Sox inbox this morning.
