Resolving the NBA Lockout

I’ve been keeping close tabs on the NBA lockout, and with a deal almost in sight yesterday, I was giving the players and owners the benefit of the doubt. When talks broke down late last night, and the two sides left the table and gave up on reaching a deal, I completely lost all respect for them. The post-meeting press conferences were absolutely pathetic from the players, where they came out swinging with both fists. Derek Fisher went so far as to say that the owners were lying to the fans, and players such as Dwyane Wade and Stephen Curry even started tweeing about the “greedy owners.” Seriously? I mean come on guys, you’re grown up, “professional” basketball players. They’re acting like spoiled kids right now.

I mean let’s take a look at this situation. Who has made the NBA possible for these players? The owners. Who is the person that is paying these players? The owners. Who actually knows how to save their money enough so that they can not only buy a team, but also use some funds in order to get players on their roster? Guess who! The owners! I mean come on, all they’re saying is that they split the BRI (Basketball Related Income) at a 50-50 rate. What is so wrong with asking for a half split of something that takes each party to put on? It’s not like the players sign their own paychecks. The fact that the players are demanding a 53-47 split in the BRI makes absolutely no sense.

It’s honestly laughable when after all these things that both sides can seriously come out and say that they are trying their hardest to get an NBA season. Really? Why not just take your millions of dollars, instead of billions, and get out on the court to play for fans that probably won’t see that kind of money in their lifetimes. The owners are being greedy in other issues that aren’t as clear-cut and I won’t get into right now, but the players need to get over themselves, realize that they may have to stop blowing thousands of dollars on five different cars each year, new TV’s every month, and all the other products that they consume at an alarming rate. It’s proven that a lot of NBA players would go bankrupt after just a couple years of being out of the league because of their inability to save money.

The NBA Needs to Get It's Act Together, and Get a Deal Done!

So once again, I want to pose a question. Who would you rather have millions of dollars going to? Someone who actually knows how to use it wisely? Or someone who is just going to go out and blow it on things that make them look better than everyone else. It makes me laugh as well when you see these players talking about not being able to accept a deal that will make them lose that much money as they are wearing custom-made suits, diamond-studded watches, diamond earings, and they are complaining about not being able to give up a couple million dollars? I’m sorry, that’s just absolutely pathetic. So to end this up before I get into too much of a player-slamming rant, the two sides need to realize how lucky they are to be making this kind of money. There are three things that they need to do in my opinion to get a deal.

1. Grow Up

2. Shut Up

3. Sit Down and Give the Fans Basketball

It doesn’t take anything more than that. A deal was in sight last night, but they broke apart because they wouldn’t split income 50-50. That’s just a ridiculous reason when both sides are equally needed to get the NBA started. Split the deal 50-50 and prove to fans that you aren’t all in it for the money. Until you do that players, my opinion of you is that you’re nothing but people who want cash. You’re not worthy of being called NBA players. You’re not worthy of being mentioned along with the greats like Bird, Jordan, Magic, and many, many more great players that went before you that played the game because they loved it. Stay off the court until you can grow up.
