ESPN College Football analyst and former SMU standout Craig James has entered his name in the Republican race for a U.S. Senate seat from Texas, a GOP representative said Monday.

Republican campaign fundraising coordinator and friend Ron Bailey had this to say about James entering his name.

“I think it’s great for Texas. Anytime you have someone with Craig’s street smarts and business sense and willingness to serve the public, it’s a great thing.”

James is well known for his days as an SMU Mustang, but most recently he is connected with the scandal at Texas Tech that ultimately led to Mike Leach’s firing.

James’ son Adam, tight end for the Red Raiders, claimed Leach mistreated him while he was suffering from a concussion.

Many believe James senior had a lot to do with Texas Tech ultimately letting the coach go, and Red Raider nation is split on the whole ordeal, but James denies having any influence in the school’s decision.

Right.

Let me just state for the record that I’ve never liked Craig James. I think he is a terrible college football announcer and just an all around idiot sometimes on the air.

However, I will not pretend I know anything of his political endeavors. He has certainly been an outgoing presence in Texas since he retired from football in 1989. He has been a successful business man and sat on the board of many prominent organizations.

His competition for the vacated seat of Kay Bailey Hutchison is Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, former Dallas mayor Tom Leppert and former Texas solicitor general Ted Cruz.
