In the standings, the Avalanche still have a shot because they are only one point out of the seventh spot in the playoffs, with four games left to make up ground. However, San Jose’s 5-1 win over the Avs has left this team Shark Bitten. Nothing short of a Tebow comeback is going to save this team from another season out of the playoffs. Is Mile High Magic still viable with Tebow in New York?

The Avalanche did not get the breaks against San Jose. They actually played pretty well for the first half of the game. They were on the wrong side of a few missed opportunities and then San Jose got on a roll that added up to four goals and an empty net goal. The Avalanche allowed San Jose to fly through the zone and find their dangerous offensive weapons.

Joe Pavelski had two goals for the Sharks. He just kills the Avalanche. His second goal was his three hundredth NHL point. Andrew Desjardins also scored a goal for the Sharks. He was all over the ice in the game and really seems to be developing into a fine NHL player. Neimi played his best game I’ve seen in a while. He definitely stole a couple from a desperate Avs team.

On the Avalanche’s side, Shane O’Brien, the goal scorer, was terrible. He was on the ice for two of the Shark’s goals and took two penalties. One of the penalties killed an Avalanche opportunity because O’Brien lost the puck and retaliated. He has really been the grit for the Avs on the blue line, but had an off night. Ryan O’Reilly was responsible for setting O’Brien up on the goal. The Avs top line also had a terrible night; David Jones, Paul Stastny and Jamie McGinn, who was playing against his former team, all were minus four on the night.

The Avalanche have only four games remaining and probably need to win all of them to have a shot at the playoffs. Even assuming four wins, luck will also be required, as six teams are battling for three spots. Unfortunately for the Avalanche, one of those spots has to go to a team in the Pacific Division.

The Avs next game is against Vancouver on Wednesday. They have not won a game in regulation against the Canucks since opening night in 2009. They blew a two-goal lead against the squad Saturday night. If the Avalanche miss the playoffs it will be the fourth time in six years. Before this stretch, the Avs had qualified every year since moving to Denver for the 1996 playoffs. The Avalanche have not gone back-to-back years without a playoff appearance.
