Most NBA teams, ones that are trying to win an NBA championship, are aiming to get younger better talent as the talent currently on their roster ages and loses its skill. This is exactly what Danny Ainge is aiming to do and has confirmed that he is willing to break up the big three to do it. Ainge’s first move to try and get younger was last season when he sent Kendrick Perkins and Nate Robinson to the Oklahoma City Thunder in exchange for Jeff Green, Nenad Kristic, and a draft pick. Now the Celtics are left just with Kristic as Green is off the team (after the Celtics failed to pick up his qualifying offer) due to an aortic aneurysm that has sidelined him for the remainder of the season.

It was reported earlier this week by Yahoo! Sports Adrian Wojnarowski that Danny Ainge had said before that he did not want to have happen to him what happened to Red Auerbach. In case you didn’t know Auerbach had the chance to trade the Celtics big three (their own big three at the time) and get respective talent in return but instead held onto the three well past their primes and got nothing in return. Now Ainge has confirmed in a statement to the Boston Globe that he would be willing to break up the Celtics big three, Ainge said he would, “consider a major move” involving the Big Three if it would help foster the team’s transition to the next era.”

Of course any GM would jump at a deal to get young talent for three players who are essentially washed up. But the statement from Ainge confirms one thing, that he is willing to let go of the Boston Celtics most beloved player since, 1998 Paul Pierce. Pierce has been a fan favorite ever since he was drafted by the Celtics 10th overall in the first round of the 1998 NBA draft. Young talent is certainly what the Celtics need as they are currently 5-8, ninth in the Eastern Conference (a half game back of the New York Knicks for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot), with an aging roster that will not be able to get it done come playoff time.
