Rookie point guard Kyrie Irving of the Cleveland Cavaliers will miss the game tonight against the Milwaukee Bucks after suffering a concussion.

Irving was kneed in the head during the fourth quarter of Tuesday night’s loss to the Miami Heat. Irving was driving to the basket when forward Chris Bosh banged into him propelling him backwards. Irving hit his head on Dwayne Wade’s knee as he fell to the ground.

Irving reported having headaches before the game on Wednesday against the Los Angeles Clippers.

According to a Cavaliers spokesperson, Irving was seen by Dr. Rick Figler at the Cleveland Clinic yesterday. The team is unsure of how much time Irving will miss but they are taking every precautionary measure to ensure his safety.

The NBA put a concussion policy in place late last year that every team must follow when a player suffers a head injury.

According to the NBA official concussion policy, if a player is diagnosed with a concussion, he will have to complete a series of steps to confirm that he’s healthy enough for competition. Once he is free of symptoms, the player must make it through increasing stages of exertion – from a stationary bike, to jogging, to agility work, to non-contact team drills – while ensuring the symptoms don’t return after each one. Then the neurologist hired to lead the NBA’s concussion program needs to be consulted before the player is cleared. The process will likely take at least several days, if not weeks.

In 23 games this season, Irving is averaging 18.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game while shooting 49.2 percent from the field.
