Denver Nuggets Laying Down the LAWSON
Soobum Im-US PRESSWIRE

The Denver Nuggets were in ninth place coming out of the All-Star break. They were a team with a 19-17 record after a strong start and an abysmal 5-12 first half finish. This same Nuggets team has suddenly won four games in a row, and still have eight games left on a nine game home stand.

It all comes down to Ty Lawson right now for the Nuggets. The third year point guard was injured before the All-Star break and spent his time off working on his shooting. The results have been a transformation of his entire game over the last week. Lawson was named the NBA Western Conference Player of the Week with an average 20.7 points, 11.7 assists 7.0 rebounds over three games.

He added to those impressive stats with 16 points, 13 assists and 7 rebounds last night against the Sacramento Kings. It was a game that saw Ty Lawson hit the game winning three in overtime. It followed up a game winning two he hit in San Antonio the night before, knocking off the Spurs. The most amazing thing is his rebound totals.

The key to the Nuggets’ success this season may be Lawson, but the two guys coming in to back him up sure are helping. Rookie Kenneth Faried from Moorehead State had his third double-double last night in five games. The rebound machine was a steal for the Nuggets in the middle of the first round. Arron Afflalo also has returned to form. He had a career high of 32 points in last night’s game, including 3 free throws in a row to tie the game at the buzzer.

The Nuggets have a eight games remaining on a home stand that includes heavy hitters Boston, Oklahoma City and Memphis. The Nuggets need to have a strong showing because they have a long road trip to follow this stint. Nene and Gallinari’s return to form should help the team. But for now all teams would be wise to try and contain Lawson.
