The NBA career of Brandon Roy was cut tragically short.  A lottery pick of the Portland Trail Blazers, Roy’s knees gave out on him long before he was ready to call it quits.  Roy retired before the 2011-12 season, but has been thinking about trying to return in the near future.

Tuesday night, Roy was back in Portland and attended their home game.  Once Roy was shown on the Jumbotron, a standing ovation broke out across the Rose Garden.  Portland has been killed by injuries to potential stars over the years and Roy is no exception.

He’s still beloved in the Pacific Northwest, which should come as no surprise.  Players of Roy’s caliber don’t come along very often.  He had many All-Star games left in his future.

Roy was one of my favorite players in the NBA.  His style of play was a throwback to a different era.  He killed players with his midrange game, which is something of a lost art in these days.  Hopefully, his next attempt to return is successful and we can all enjoy him once more.

Thanks to SB Nation for the video.
