As New York Knicks point guard Jeremy Lin rose to instant, overnight fame, and created a social phenomenon of “Linsanity”, plenty were quick to jump on the bandwagon and media clamored to have the next take.

One of these media, ex-ESPN employee Anthony Federico, published an insensitive headline in a late-night website recap that created a flurry of controversy which led to his dismissal from network.

Since, Federico has reached out to Jeremy Lin in apology and the two worked together to find a time to meet, discuss the issue, and put it all behind them.

Yesterday, schedules were coordinated, and the pair met for an hour in New York City to do just that.

The meeting alone paints a picture of Jeremy Lin’s humble and forgiving nature, but the nature of their conversation says even more.

According to Federico, the talk was more about faith than basketball:

The fact that he reached out to me.

The fact that he took the time to meet with me in his insanely busy schedule . . . He’s just a wonderful, humble person. He didn’t have to do that, especially after everything had kind of died down for the most part.

We talked more about matters of faith [and] reconciliation. We talked about our shared Christian values and what we’re both trying do with this situation .. . We didn’t talk about the headline for more than three minutes.

Anthony Federico made a mistake, and was confident enough in himself to apologize directly to the party he offended.

Jeremy Lin was gracious enough to take the time out of his busy schedule as a budding NBA icon to accept that apology in person.

If only the world worked this way all the time– with people meeting face-to-face to repair problems so often caused by our fascination will all things digital– we might all be amazed at how much better things could be.

One can dream.
