The Dallas Cowboys need to make some changes on the coaching staff and team owner Jerry Jones said Friday that will likely happen this offseason. The Cowboys have several assistant coaches whose contracts are expiring this month and some of them need to be replaced anyway.

“We’ll give you better answers on that as we go over the next three weeks,” Jones said. “That’s pretty much the way I’ll leave it.”

The Cowboys have kept secondary coach Dave Campo around way too long. Jerry Jones made the mistake of making Campo head coach from 2000 through 2002 and then moronically hired him back as the team’s secondary coach in 2008.

Dallas’ secondary has been the laughing stock of the NFL for the past few seasons, so it’s time for Campo to go. The franchise is loyal to Campo because he’s been around since 1989, but he has no more use to the team.

Cowboys offensive line coach Hudson Houck was also around for two Super Bowls back in the mid-1990s while current head coach Jason Garrett was the Cowboys’ backup quarterback. However, two consecutive disappointing seasons likely may behoove Jones to move on.

Cowboys safeties coach Brett Maxie, assistant offensive line coach Wes Phillips, assistant receivers coach Keith O’Quinn and running backs coach Skip Peete also have contracts expiring.

Phillips definitely needs to go; he was only brought on when his dad, current Houston Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, was hired as the Cowboys’ head coach in 2007 and he’s only been a hindrance since.

Maxie is a quality coach, but the performance of the Cowboys’ secondary over the past few years may be too much for Jones to want to keep him on board. O’Quinn and Peete are expendable, so their fates depend heavily on who’s available for Jones to sign as their replacements.

The Cowboys need personnel changes among players as well, but at least Jones realizes the coaching staff needs a makeover. Change is the only thing that can fix this under-achieving team and Jones’ realization of that is at least a step in the right direction.
