Dallas Cowboys Unwisely Won’t Pursue Peyton Manning

Lately there’s a lot of speculation that the Dallas Cowboys will pursue Peyton Manning granted he becomes a free agent on or before March 8. Those saying this mention Cowboys owner Jerry Jones’ desire to sell tickets to massive Cowboys Stadium and bring stars to Dallas for publicity. That’s very true, but this one is different; Jerry Jones won’t bring Peyton Manning to Dallas and here’s why:

There’s only one thing more important to Jones than publicity for his beloved Cowboys – his ego. Regardless of all the disappointing performances and chokes at the end of games by Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, Jones has stood by and defended him to the Dallas media and fans. Not only that, but Jones has said on multiples occasions that Romo can and will win a Super Bowl with the Cowboys.

Regardless of whether you or Jones believes that, Romo will play in Dallas for at least the final two years of his contract. Even if Jones thinks Romo is hurting the team or he doesn’t give the Cowboys the best chance to win, he won’t pull him or sign a better quarterback like Manning because, quite simply, he won’t ever admit he’s wrong.

That’s why Manning won’t be a Dallas Cowboy. First of all, Manning wants to re-do his contract so he can stay in Indianapolis and retire with the Colts. Second, he’s only going to sign with a contender if he does become a free agent within the next month. Finally, the Cowboys can’t afford him.

Not literally; Jones has enough money to buy the Colts if that were allowed. However, the Cowboys have way too many areas on which to improve with the salary cap room the team has this offseason. Even if Manning does become a free agent and he wants to play in Dallas, Jones would have to trade Romo and that won’t happen.

Jones simply will not change anything at quarterback before Romo’s deal expires. Heck, Jones will probably give Romo another contract extension within the next two years and then he’ll be around beyond 2013.

Now, does bringing in Manning make sense? You better betcha. He has two, maybe three good seasons left in the NFL. Romo has two seasons left on his contract and he’s still unproven as a winner. The Cowboys could trade Romo to bring in defensive line and/or secondary help and then sign Manning, granted he becomes available. That would make the Cowboys’ offense the best in the NFL and Super Bowl-worthy.

Of course, that is assuming Manning can still play at an elite level after three neck surgeries last offseason. It’s a great daydream for any Cowboys fan as it would mean instant Super Bowl contention for the next two or three years, but it will never happen because of Jones’ ego. If you don’t believe that, you’re an ignorant football fan because Jones will never admit Romo wasn’t the right guy for the job. He’ll be the Cowboys’ quarterback until he leaves via free agency or retires and Manning will never play in Dallas, even though it would be the smartest move Jones ever made.

  1. Steve says:

I like this article because it seems as if you want the “BIG BOSS” Jones to read this and go against your claims… that’s fine with me , I would trade ROMO for a way better O-line and secondary and sign MANNING ! and if we stay with ROMO, we need to upgrade O-line and secondary anyway … C’MON JERRY LET’S GET IT TOGETHER THIS OFFSEASON !!!

  2. Naron Williams says:

Peyton will not come to a NFC team as long as Eli remains in the NFC. Archie wants his sons to meet in the superbowl, not keep the other from it which is why eli pouted like a little girl when san diego drafted him.

  3. sanchotobe says:

This article is stupid. The Dallas Cowboys will not sign Manning because he is not worth the risk. What good would it do to have a HOF QB who cant walk after the first major hit on him? And Romo is not the cause of the cowboys woes. You idiot writers spend ur days writing such useless B.S. that you finally start to buy into it too. Romo had a great year, was he the reason for a loss or two…maybe, was he the reason for a lost season? I dont think so. He is a great QB and can win, but like Brady’s whine…excuse me..wife said, he can not do it all by himself. The problem is the GM. Fix that Jerry Jones, and you will see a Lombardi trophy once again.

  4. mrg says:

Maybe the stupidist idea I’ve heard yet. If Petting is the guarantee to get a team a super bowl victory, then why does he only have one? (His brother already has two). Tony Romo is not the Cowboys problem. He is the only reason they have a chance at all. No way Petting is mobile eneough to survive behind the o-line Romo had to deal with last year. If Cowboys had Giants defense they would have been super bowl champagne this year. Romo out played Eli in both games.

  5. pete moreno says:

Fire the GM , start there!

  6. Adam says:

Off-line is 40% of the problem cant run half the time or pass half time and it happens every game. Secondary is another 40% of the problem receivers wide open in the middle almost every play and then no check at the line buy buy down the side line “Newman”.Romos main problem is the receivers are not wide open like Brady has 90% of the time. Romo has to find someone and they are covered 70% of the time while hes running from that DE LB who ever slips throw that line.Garrett needs to add more pass plays or fix the ones he has to get someone wide open in less than 7.And there is no way Manning would help the Cowboys he would be sacked out before halftime game one “retired”.Manning was 2 years ago a great QB but he didnt get to the Superbowl very quick or much.

  7. Paladin says:

I agree with what so many others have said and think. The Dallas GM is the problem and has been the problem for many years! And the main problem for the GM is the over the top ego of the owner! I suggested months ago, the best thing for Cowboy fans to do is hit Jerry Jones in the pocket book! Stop buying Cowboy tickets to games, stop buying souveniers and merchandise until Jones steps down and hires a real GM! Sure, I love the Cowboys and I have since 1960! But, I’m tired of losing and having no playoff wins, no Super Bowls in too long and a team that has been in decline for too long! I want the old Landry/Staubach days back! Boycott the Cowboys until Jones see’s the light! We fans have suffered long enough!

  8. Michael T says:

I am a Jerry Jones fan. I think that Jerry is one of the best, if not THE best team OWNER in the NFL. I’ve met Jerry twice and he is as passionate about the Dallas Cowboys as I am, and I’ve been a fan for over 50 years. Jerry is also a decent and caring man with loyalty to his coaches and players.

Having said that, I am NOT a fan of Jerry the GM. You just can’t wear both hats (owner and GM) in a team with the size and complexity of The Dallas Cowboys. There always comes a time when the owner has to step up and override the decisions of the GM when a gamble on a player or coach hasn’t paid off, and that doesn’t happen here.

Finally, to the point: Peyton Manning has been a great QB for 14 yrs because he called his own plays, reading and reacting to defensive schemes and errors. Let’s say for a moment that Manning comes to Dallas, slips on a set of headphones and manages to lend his vision and saavy to Tony Romo, calling the plays (shut up and step back, Garrett) and leads the Dallas Cowboys into the 2012 NFL playoffs… wouldn’t THAT justify paying a premium to bring Manning to Dallas?

Meanwhile, Manning waits in the wings and is given a chance to practice, heal and prove that he can still play. Maybe Tony fractures another rib or pinky and Manning takes the field to a sellout crowd and record national media coverage. Try to measure the value of THAT versus the cost of signing Peyton Manning.

Would Peyton Manning accept that role? I’d damned sure like to find out.

  9. nicci says:

Romo is horrible, he chokes constantly, never wins an important game. I don’t care if Romo puts up numbers, I would much rather have any other quarterback, preferably one who doesn’t give up on the season once december comes around. trading romo is the only option, jerry jones has always been stupid he could have had a dominant dynasty going with jimmy johnson sure johnson won two super bowls for the cowboys but if johnson had been allowed to stay and do his thing we would be talking 4-5 super bowls within that era.

i want to respect jerry jones, but this whole romo thing where he refuses to acknowledge how horrible romo is is just the end of it, i am converting over to the Houston Texans.
