The last thing the Denver Broncos, or any team for that matter, needs in training camp is for the injury bug to start biting.  With slight injuries happening the first week of camp, Executive VP John Elway has had to fill a couple of spots with cast-offs looking for work.  The problem is that the perception about the Broncos is clearly whether or not they can stay healthy in a hopeful 2012.

With one week in the books, Denver has seen WRs Eric Decker(groin), Greg Orton(ankle) and D’Andre Goodwin(ankle) all leave the field with the training staff.  RB Ronnie Hillman and S Quinton Carter left with pulled hamstrings which could be bothersome but are not considered serious.  So Elway on Saturday had to sign S Kendrick Perkins and today sign off waivers ex-Seattle Seahawk WR Cameron Kenney to fill the roster back to 90 men.

Although none of the injuries are season threatening, Denver’s offense needs to have ample time to get into rhythm as the first preseason game looms. Decker was beginning to be Manning’s favorite target and of course Orton, Goodwin and Hillman are fighting for jobs.  If the Broncos are going to make any run at a division title or wild card this year, they will need players in all phases to be healthy and on the field.

Hillman, drafted this year out of San Diego State, is considered by many to be a Ray Rice type back with quick bursts and good hands out of the backfield. He would be an excellent compliment to Willis Mcgahee and is battling for a spot with oft-injured Knowshon Moreno, Jeremiah Johnson, Lance Ball, Mario Fannin and Xavier Omon.

If the bug keeps biting in Denver, look for the team to get off to a slow start come September against the Pittsburgh Steelers in week one.  The strength of this team will rely on health and we all know that groin injuries and hamstrings are tough to gauge when it comes to making cuts up and down the field as a RB or WR.  One thing you can trust, though is that Coach John Fox will be very cautious with Decker, Goodwin and Hillman as these players will be key to a potent offense this year.
