With the second preseason game for the Denver Broncos now in the rear view mirror, it’s time to get back to our analysis of the positions. Today we combine two of them, the tight ends and the fullbacks. The tight ends are going to be a big part of a Peyton Manning led offense, and the Broncos signed two veterans in free agency that should have an impact.

It starts with Jacob Tamme, Manning’s teammate with the Indianapolis Colts. Tamme had a rough game on Saturday night versus the Seattle Seahawks but it was just that, a rough night. Tamme is a proven pass catching tight end who had his best season in 2010 while playing with Manning. The former Colts need to continue to work on their timing but with three weeks to go before the regular season, they should be able to get things cleaned up.

The Broncos also signed, Joel Dressen from the Houston Texans and that native son is happy to be home. Dressen grew up in Colorado and was a star at Colorado State. He is a pass catching tight end, like Tamme, and should flourish in an offense led by Manning. The Broncos also have two young players in, Julius Thomas and Virgil Green that need to step up and prove that they belong in the NFL. To this point in the preseason, neither Thomas or Green have turned heads. They probably both make the team because it is too early to give up on second year players, but they need to start showing something soon.

The full-back position is almost outdated but the Broncos will use on in some situations this season. Chris Gronkowski will be that guy who plays in short yardage situations, and when the Broncos want to pound the ball in the running game. Gronkowski also played with Manning in Indianapolis and understands protections, and the audibles that Manning likes to make.

Unlike the past couple of seasons, the Denver Broncos will feature the tight end and they will be used to exploit the middle of the field. That wraps up every position but one, we look at the quarterbacks on Monday. As I recall, the Broncos made a fairly big move there.
