The last thing that the Denver Broncos want at this stage of their preseason is to add a wrinkle to the one position battle that has been the toughest to decide. The starting running back this season is undoubtedly Willis McGahee, with a slew of others vying for what I believe to be two other slots. Rookie Ronnie Hillman is almost a sure bet to make the squad, with Lance Ball and Knowshon Moreno battling out the remaining spot. But with trouble brewing in Jacksonville, is Maurice Jones-Drew going to be available?  And will the Broncos be serious suitors?

A backfield of Jones-Drew and McGahee could be a powerful punch for any rushing game with Hillman as an out option for Peyton Manning.  In the long run, though, will Executive VP John Elway be willing to pay MJD the money that he wants and deserves?  With dishing out $96million to Manning and bringing in free agents such as Mike Adams, Drayton Florence and others to shore up the defense, is MJD even a viable monetary option for Denver?  This could turn into quite an inquiry.

At 27 yrs old, there is no doubt that Jones-Drew will have suitors, but how many is the question.  Last year, MJD rushed for a league best 1,606 yds and 11 TDs while posting 1,980 yds  from scrimmage for a terrible Jacksonville Jaguars offense.  The longer that Jones-Drew decides to hold out, his stock will plummet.  He is now willing to listen to trades and the one team that can offer options when it comes to trades is the Broncos. Maybe a trade of Moreno and a draft pick or two would help Jaguars owner Shad Khan decide to dump the disgruntled running back?

Broncos fans would love to get a hold of this talented runner that could bring back memories of Terrell Davis and Mike Anderson roaming the backfield behind Elway and giving the Mile High Salute.  Sorry, got a bit ahead of myself there, but you know what I mean.   The only other team that would go all out on MJD in my opinion is the New York Jets, as they are in dire need of a quality running back.  But it is always good to hold out hope Broncos fans, because this is one wrinkle in the system that you would welcome any day.
