Stability on Coaching Staff for Detroit Lions Heading into 2012 Season
With the re-signing of receivers coach Shawn Jefferson last week, as reported by MLive.com and other sources, the Detroit Lions have ensured that its 2011 coaching staff will remain intact for 2012. The Lions expect such continuity in the coaching ranks will bring the team even closer to reaching the Super Bowl next year than this season’s 10-6 record and first-round playoff loss to the New Orleans Saints.
It’s not difficult to see the soundness of this reasoning. One could argue that familiarity might eventually lead to stagnation or a staleness in leadership. But coming off the team’s first playoff appearance in more than a decade creates its own freshness and momentum. Both the coaching staff and players have the taste for winning now, and the staff, fortified by this stability, will not let that taste go stale.
Teams around the league aiming to fill openings on their staffs did not ignore Lions personnel. Both Jefferson and secondary coach Tim Walton received offers to join the staff of the St. Louis Rams; Jefferson reportedly also received additional offers. The lure of building on their momentum was strong and provided compelling reason for both to remain with the Lions.
Jefferson’s re-signing represents in whole the team’s committed assurance to players and fans that more winning seasons lie ahead.
