There aren’t any more openings left on the Detroit Lions practice squad for 2012. Seven of the eight positions were accounted for Sunday afternoon, but not all officially signed for. Fans were alerted to the last two of the seven picks via Twitter, not an official notice from the Lions head office.
This was the unofficial list of who the Lions had contacted to join the practice squad as of 5 PM:
Stephfon Green – Running Back
Patrick Edwards – Wide Receiver
Carmen Messina – Linebacker
Rodney Austin – Center
Ross Weaver – Cornerback
Kris Durham – Wide Receiver
Drayton Florence – Cornerback
Durham comes from the Seattle Seahawks after they released him on Friday. Now, take a look at his picture and what do you see on that helmet? A big, fat capital G. G is for those University of Georgia Bulldogs and guess who else hails from the dawg pound? You got it, Matthew Stafford. For three years the two were teammates and they have a few completions from their ol’ college days together.
Durham was upbeat about the move, and tweeted Go Lions with a picture at the airport showing a departure flight to Detroit:

Florence comes via the Denver Broncos this weekend. Even though he had just secured a two year deal in May with the Broncos, they cut him and kept Tony Carter for their starting spot. Kassim Osgood is a former teammate with Florence, so he actually leaked the news via Twitter first by welcoming Florence to the Lions. Then Florence tweeted:

After 9 PM, news came from the head office that all eight spots were full….but Florence was NOT on that list. Was there something that made him change his mind?
The following two players were announced as officially being the last two on the practice squad:
Lorenzo Washington – Linebacker
Shaun Chapas – Fullback
Washington last played with the University of Alabama Crimson Tide. Chapas came from the Dallas Cowboys and is yet another former teammate of Stafford and Durham. Is there a pattern developing here?
Where does this leave Florence? Sitting on the outside, since the official release did not include his name. Will there be another update once all of the physicals are had and the paperwork is signed tomorrow? Twitter has been suspiciously quiet since then, too.
