Drafted by Detroit 121st overall in 2008, University of Maine product Gustav Nyquist has signed a two-year entry-level contract with the Red Wings.  Currently a junior, Nyquist has been Maine’s leading scorer for all three years he has played there.  Last year, he led the nation in scoring with 61 points in 39 games, and was named a top 3 finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, but was runner-up to Blake Geoffrion.

This year, he had 51 points in 36 games, and was again named a top 10 finalist for the Hobey Baker, before signing the contract (the next round of cuts for the Hobey Baker finalists is on thursday).  Nyquist was also signed to an amateur try out deal by the Wings AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapid Griffins, and he will play out the rest of the season trying to help the Griffins in their run for the playoffs.

Nyquist is an absolute puck hound, and he brings a great work ethic, and two-way proficiency that should allow him to succeed in the Red Wings system.  Aside from needing to pack on some more muscle, and to shoot the puck a bit more, Nyquist does not appear to have any glaring holes in his game.  He is highly talented, and he looks like he will prove Hakan Andersson a prophet yet again.  He has the looks of a solid first or second line forward for the Red Wings.  Seriously, how do these guys do it?
