The NFL world was shocked this morning to find out that Carson Palmer was traded to the Oakland Raiders after seven weeks of sitting out. Following months of rumors, Palmer was traded to Oakland for a 2012 first round draft pick and a conditional 2013 second round pick. However, if the Raiders were to win a playoff contest then the 2013 conditional pick will be bumped up to a first round pick. This seems like a lot for a 31-year old franchise quarterback, but recent first round selections (Reggie Bush, Robert Gallery, Derrick Harvey, Aaron Maybin, and JaMarcus Russell) have not exactly lived up to expectations.

Palmer joins a roster that already includes the league’s top rusher in Darren McFadden and has more top five picks than anyone else in the league. He will be able to rely on a strong running game through the first couple of weeks as he learns the Raiders’ detailed west-coast offense.

He has been one of the most reliable pocket quarterbacks in recent memory with 154 career passing touchdowns with just 100 interceptions. He will benefit from the sudden emergence of Jacoby Ford and Darrius Heyward-Bey. The duo will certainly give Palmer some weapons to utilize downfield. This will help as Palmer will be forced to throw the ball close to 40 times a game due to the Raiders’ abysmal pass defense that allows 284 yards a game.

CP can easily crack fantasy lineups before the season is over and the veteran will be an upgrade over current starters like; Sam Bradford, Blaine Gabbert, Rex Grossman, Tarvaris Jackson, and Mark Sanchez. Palmer has ten regular season games left to make an impact and the two-time Pro Bowler can easily throw 15 touchdowns. He will be a great sleeper candidate for the rest of the year and especially considering that he can still be found on a majority of waiver wires.
