When fantasy baseball drafts were underway this spring, many owners predicted that OF Billy Hamilton of the Cincinnati Reds would have a breakout fantasy season. Hamilton has been a highly coveted prospect for years and has finally received a chance to display his talent in the majors on an everyday basis.
Unfortunately, the speedster has gotten off to a rather slow start. Hamilton has stolen just four bases through the first 14 games and the converted shortstop hasn’t been as game changing as advertised.
Even worse, Hamilton has been shockingly thrown out twice this season. He was supposedly impossible to throw out on the bases, but the speed-demon has struggled to get a jump in the cold weather. Most pegged Hamilton to instantly lead the league in steals, but he has been very slow out of the gates in 2014.
Hamilton hasn’t had much of an impact at the plate either. He currently has a pathetic .170 batting average (8-for-47) and a similarly lackluster .220 On Base Percentage. He has struck out 11 times as well and has looked like a rookie inside the batter’s box.
The outfielder obviously has all the talent in the world and is perhaps the fastest player in the majors. However, he is still a little raw and may need a little more time in the minors to work on his hitting. Either way, Hamilton is worth hanging onto in all formats, because it is only a matter of time until everything finally clicks for the youngster.
