Video: San Jose Sharks Ryane Clowe Plays the Puck from the Bench
Jason O. Watson-US PRESSWIRE

If the Stanley Cup Playoffs are anywhere near as good as the Los Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks game on Thursday night we are in for a real treat.

The Sharks stole a 6-5 shootout win to draw even with the Kings for first place in the Pacific Division. The game featured a little bit of everything including, 10 total goals, five power play goals, five third period goals, 67 shots, 63 penalty minutes and puck played by a Sharks player on the bench.

Yes, Ryane Clowe played the puck with his stick from the bench. The Kings were given a 5 on 3 power play with just under five-minutes to play in the third period, trailing by a goal. Justin Williams quickly converted on a laser beam shot to even the game up.

With time left on the second power play, the Kings had a golden opportunity to seize control of the game by grabbing the lead. As Jarret Stoll raced up the boards for a 3 on 2 break, Clowe reached out and tipped the puck off his stick. The Kings players on the ice angrily gestured to all of the four on ice officials to make the call – none of them saw it, so none of them called it.

Had Stoll been able to get into the zone unimpeded he and his teammates may have had an excellent scoring chance. Instead, the game ended tied followed by a scoreless overtime period. Joe Pavelski scored the only goal in the shootout to hand San Jose the win and bonus point.

The latest blown call is just another in a series of black eyes on NHL officiating this season. One can only hope it gets better for the playoffs. It would be awful for a series to be decided on the incompetence of the guys in stripes.
